Four talks exploring the science of the self, the body, and the story in leadership.

THE KNOWLEDGE

The sociology of identity shows how who we are as people and as leaders is conditioned through socialisation processes; through the stories we hear from the moment we are born. These stories affect the way we see the world and our places within it, but they also shape our brains and our bodies. Yet, we can re-write these stories, recondition ourselves, and become the authors of ourselves, and our leadership. The question is how? 


The science of somatic intelligence shows how that socialised identity is held in the body. Yet, we can reshape how we show up physically, how we move through space to be that leader we’re authoring. But this somatic intelligence also tells us how we are beginning to respond to the environment we are in. If we can tap into this intelligence, we can be the leader the current context needs – all the time. The question is how?


The science of narrative shows how we need stories to make sense of our experiences, and how story constitutes the brain's predictive architecture and so how we think, act, and lead. It also shows how the stories running through organisations shape culture, behaviour, and what people believe is possible. The question is how to tell the right stories?


Together, these three sciences provide something new: a complete account of what develops the leaders and the leadership that the current moment demands — and the knowledge to build it.

THE EXAMINED LEADER

Socrates said the unexamined life is not worth living. He might have said the same about leadership.

 

The leaders who navigate the volatile, polarised, AI-disrupted environment we are all living and working in — where the old certainties are failing, where expertise alone is no longer enough, and where the pressure to lead with clarity while carrying your own uncertainty has never been higher — share one thing that doesn't appear in any competency framework: they know who they are, how they came to be that way, and what they are consciously choosing to become.


This talk examines how identity is assembled — through the layers of socialisation that shape what we believe, how we lead, and what we take to be simply true about ourselves — and what it takes to become the conscious author of what comes next.

THE INTELLIGENCE LEADERS AREN'T USING

There is an intelligence system operating in every leader right now that almost no one has been taught to use. This system processes information faster than conscious thought. It registers what is actually happening before the analytical mind has formed a view, and it contains the mechanisms through which leaders can control how they respond, despite the demands of the day. This is the somatic intelligence system which, when engaged with, reveals that the body is already doing leadership work. The question is how you learn to listen to it.


This talk makes the scientific case — grounded in neuroscience, not intuition — for why somatic intelligence is the most underestimated leadership capacity available, why the practices most leaders dismiss as soft or alternative turn out to be architecturally transformative, and why developing this intelligence is the most direct route to leading with clarity, presence, and authenticity in conditions of sustained complexity and pressure.

THE STORY RUNNING YOUR ORGANISATION

Every organisation is being run by a story. Not the one in the annual report or the values statement — the other one. The informal, unspoken, pervasive story about who matters here, how things actually work, and what it costs to be honest. That story is doing more to shape culture, behaviour, and performance than any strategy, policy, or leadership development programme. And most leaders have never examined it.


Drawing on the neuroscience of narrative — how story synchronises minds, changes brain chemistry, and becomes the invisible architecture through which people experience organisational reality — this talk reveals why culture is so much harder to change than leaders expect, and what it actually takes to shift it.

THE UNEXAMINED LEADER

The most significant challenge facing leadership in the current environment is not strategic. It is human. In a world defined by systemic fragility, AI disruption, polarisation, and the collapse of the certainties that once anchored professional identity, the capacities that leadership now demands cannot be developed through knowledge or technique alone.

 

They require something more fundamental: a different understanding of what a leader actually is, where their patterns of thinking and responding come from, and what it takes to change them at the level of architecture where they actually live.

 

Three converging bodies of science — the sociology of identity and discourse, the neuroscience of story, and the science of somatic intelligence — together provide that understanding for the first time. This keynote is where those three sciences meet.
